Dad’s Birthday

Poems From Oostburg, Wisconsin

Dad’s birthday
January 5, 1915

I remember
when he died
I felt like my young life
was torn in two

now this year
it will be for me
exactly as many years
with him alive on earth
as now gone from earth

but not gone
I find pictures
of Sweden on blogs
and think of Nanna and Poppa Ernie too

I get up early like him
and I helped care
for Mom for him too

some say poems
should “show and not tell”
but today I tell someone in pain
you can remember
and be happy again
love does not die
